Peiodontal Disease

Peiodontal Disease is a type of disease that affects one or more of the Periodontal tissues. Such as the Alveolar Bone, Periodontal Ligament, Cementum, and Gingiva. While many differnt disease affect the tooth supporting structures, plaque induced inflammatory lesions make up the vast majority of Periodonatl Diseases, and have traditionally been divided into two categories; Gingivitis or Periodontitis. While in some cases gingivitis never progresses to periodontitis, data indicates that gingivitis always precedes periodontitis.

Periodontal diseases are serious infections that if left untreated can lead to tooth and bone loss. Additionally, this serious infection has been linked to heart disease, stroke, pregnancy problems, diabetes, respiratory problems and osteoporosis.

Periodontal treatment is necessary when various conditions affect the health of your gums and the regions of your jawbone which hold your teeth in place. Retaining your teeth is directly dependent on proper periodontal care and maintenance. Healthy gums enhance the appearance of your teeth, and of course your smile.

When your gums become unhealthy, they can either recede or become swollen and red. In later stages, the supporting bone is destroyed and your teeth will shift, loosen, or fall out. These changes greatly affect and decrease your ability to chew and speak.
